Red Pepper based Shingles Remedies
Red Pepper based Shingles Remedies
Red chilli peppers contain a substance known as capsaicin which is what creates the fiery hot sensation you get in your mouth when you eat chilli peppers.
Capsaicin has been discovered to be useful in easing the pain of a form of shingles known as post herpetic neuralgia. It appears to work by depleting substance P a neurochemical transmitter which has the function of transferring pain. In short it works as an analgesic by blocking the pain from nerve endings to the skin. When a placebo test was run for six weeks, it was found that a much larger percentage (80%) of patients who used capsicum cream experienced pain relief than those who were on the placebo.
Capsaicin can be used as either a commercial preparation or by making a concoction of your own.
Effective commercial creams that contain capsaicin include Zostrix and capsaicin cream.
Capsaicin cream (Capsicum cream) can be obtained from pharmacists or chemist stores. You can also get it online. It may take a few weeks of use for the benefits of using the cream to appear.
For effective use, you should apply the cream 2-4 times a day. A typical concentration is 0.025% active ingredient. The commonest side effect people experience is a stinging or burning sensation in the affected or treated area of skin.
To make your own capsaicin preparation as a shingles remedy, you will need:
Powdered dried red pepper, White lotion, Disposable gloves, A bowl and Plastic spatula or spoon, Soap.
Simply stir a small quantity of it into any white skin lotion. Add more and more in small quantities until the whole mix becomes a light pink colour.
While making sure that you wear gloves and avoid touching the preparation or getting it into your eyes or onto any sensitive or cut tissues, dab a small quantity on a tiny test patch of skin and wait to see if any irritation is caused.
If after several minutes there is no irritation, you can spread it onto the inflamed tissues. If you experience any irritation, do not use any more. Simply wash it off your skin and apply a soothing cream.
Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly when you are finished.
Capsaicin Cream is most useful for the treatment of post herpetic neuralgia.
